Amberjack Fishing Clearwater, Tampa, St. Pete, FL
An aggressive, predatory fish, the Amberjack is frequently found trolling wreckage, reefs, and other structures under surface level. Found in small groups or alone, the Amberjack feeds on a variety of smaller fish, as well squids and crab. Because of the wreckage and underwater structures in the central Gulf Coast area, Amberjacks are a common game fish for charters in Tampa, St. Pete Beach, and Clearwater.
Description: Amberjacks are characterized by a muddled brownish-blue back, and a wide amber-colored stripe running the side length of the body. A dark strip stretches diagonally from the dorsal fin and back through each eye. Distinguishing characteristics are also determined by the number of gill rakers, and the number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin.
Size: Though most fishermen hook less mature Amberjacks ranging from 20-30 lbs, it can become a very large game fish with weights recorded up to 170 lbs. They make a terrific main course if you choose to keep your catch.
Location: Found Gulfwide, the Amberjack frequents where wreckage and reefs lie in both inshore waters and depths up to 300 feet.
